The region’s top juniors opened Sunday’s racing with the sprint-distance 2012 PATCO Junior Pan American Championships. In all, seven Americans recorded top-10 finishes with first-year Junior Elite Tamara Gorman (Rapid City, S.D.) leading the way with a runner-up finish in 1:03:02 on the women’s side. Eli Hemming (Kiowa, Colo.) paced the U.S. men with a fourth-place effort in 55:51. With their finishes, Gorman and Hemming qualified for the 2012 ITU Junior World Championships in October in Auckland, New Zealand.
Athletes Spencer Clark, Clive, IA (16th) and TJ Gleason, Sioux Falls, SD (22nd) also competed in the race. After a great swim Jenny Brown, Waukee, IA, unfortunately crashed on the bike course and did not finish the competition. She is recovering well.
Other U.S. athletes who competed where Johanna Gartman (sixth, Colorado Springs, Colo.), Haele Jasen (eighth, Belgium, Ill.) and Breanna Hemming (ninth, Kiowa, Colo.) also placed in the top 10 for the women, while Luke Farkas (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Hunter Honeycutt (Tifton, Ga.) finished sixth and eighth, respectively, and Andrew Gyenis (VA), Tristan Bunch (CA), Ryan Peterson (VA) and Alex Marshall (GA).
